Strawberry Picking

Raspberry and Strawberry Bounty

Raspberry and Strawberry Bounty

Home grown raspberries and strawberries picked and eaten within the hour...and it sounds corny but they really were better than I've tasted from the shops. I'm not a big fan of either, but these were surprisingly sweet and scrumptious.

So, what have the kids and I learned about raspberries and strawberries from having the allotment?

Don't know if this is normal but they produced all this fruit without us doing anything. The raspberries just emerged out of the ground after last year's died away, and the strawberries went through winter without any protection. Neither of them were watered except by the rain, until recently when I thought I'd better give them water since they were producing fruit.

Woodlice and ants like to eat strawberries as well as birds! Strawberry plants grow offshoots that creep and crawl and establish in the most unexpected places...still providing fruit. They will provide a crop for 3 years. I think we'll plant more next spring.

One very, very surprising thing for me was our raspberries don't seem the same as those I've tried, and not liked, before - I don't like the bits you get, but ours were just big and very soft with no obvious hard bits/seeds/whatever. Very nice.
