For less than £3 you can make loads of colourful play dough and keep it for ages in the fridge.
It took me 6 years to try this out because I thought it was going to be too much hassle but honestly, it's a breeze - you just pile it all in a pan and heat it till it goes into a dough. Then play...kept mine quiet for ages AND we think it's better than shop-bought stuff - it doesn't dry out as fast and is very easy to work with.
This is the recipe we used, and I've priced it up from ASDA supermarket (part of Walmart, for US readers)
* 1 cup flour (Smartprice Plain Flour 39p) * 1 cup warm water * 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (£1.06) * 1 teaspoon oil (68p/litre) * 1/4 cup salt (26p) * food colouring (25p - yellow, green, red, blue, pink, black)
Making the Play Dough
Add all ingredients to your pan, adding food coloring last.
Stir over medium heat until mix starts to get too thick to stir and starts to form a ball.
Remove from pan and knead. It will feel a bit sticky at first but soon gets dryer as it cools down.
Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled.
Keep it in the fridge and lasts for ages!
Tips For Kids Play Dough
1. Try mixing the food colourings, or even adding glitter:
Red + Blue = Purple
Blue + Yellow = Green
Yellow + Red = Orange
2. If you buy the biggest pack of salt you can find, it's usually better value and you can use it for dying clothing too or getting rid of ice in winter ;-)
